Burn Ban Info
The cost for a burning permit is $20.00 payable to Maple Valley Fire & Life Safety. Burn Permits may be obtained by coming into the headquarters office located at 23775 SE 264th Street, Maple Valley between 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. Following payment and application, a district personnel will deliver and issue the permit on-site within 24 hrs of application.
OUTDOOR BURNING REQUIREMENTS:
Types of Material:Only natural vegetation may be burned.
Burn Bans:Burn bans may be in effect throughout the year due to extreme fire hazard conditions or poor air quality conditions. These burn bans are put into effect by Puget Sound Clean Air Agency pscleanair.org, King County Fire Marshal’s Office metrokc.gov/ddes/fire/, Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office or The Fire District. During such bans, no outdoor burning shall occur.
Burning Without Permit: Where burning is allowed and the pile size does not exceed 4’x4’x & 3’ in height, a permit is not required.
Burn Permit Required: A permit to burn is required when conducting Land Clearing, Agricultural, or Silvicultural burning. A permit is required anytime the burn pile is going to exceed the 4’x 4’ x 3’ in height. No burn pile shall exceed 30’x 30’ x 20’ in height.
A burn permit may be obtained by contacting Maple Valley Fire & Life Safety at (425) 432-0200. Office hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. The cost of the burn permit is $20.00. Requests for a burn permit shall be made no less than 24 hours in advance of the burn date.
Recreational, Ceremonial, & Cooking Fires:There is an exception in no burn areas for recreational, ceremonial, and cooking fires. These types of fires must not exceed 2’x 2’ wide and must be 2’ deep, only use natural wood or charcoal and are allowed in all areas, providing there is no temporary burn ban in effect.
Burn Barrels: The use of barrels for burning is prohibited in all areas of the District.
Hauled in Material:The burning of material that has been hauled in from another area is prohibited.
No Burn Areas:Burning is specifically prohibited in urban areas, such as the city limits of Maple Valley and Covington; Jenkins Creek, Timberlane, Maple Valley Heights, Riverbend Mobile Home Park and Eastwood Forest neighborhoods. The exception is “Recreational, Ceremonial and Cooking Fires” as described above.
Revised Burn Area:Burning for the area west of 216th SE to 188th SE and south from SE 272nd to SE 287th, has changed from burning only allowed in April and October to burning year around. The revised burn regulations affect the neighborhoods known as Homestead Acres and Winterwood Estates. Eastwood Forest, which falls under the city limits of Maple Valley, is still prohibited from burning.
